Extension and renovation — blending period charm with modern flair

Christine and Terry needed to extend and renovate their period Camberwell home for their growing family and for modern amenity. Initial client ideas for a “typical” two-storey eastern suburbs upwards extension were developed into something much more individual to meet Christine and Terry’s actual needs and tastes.

The brief

  • Retain period charm, extend with harmonious modernity
  • Increase both private and entertainment space
  • Capitalise on natural light
  • Completely modernise kitchen & bathrooms
  • New expansive entertainment area linked to the garden
  • Effective balance between openness and privacy

The result

Style and function transitions in a harmonious way from the more classical and charming areas at the front, to the new modern spaces, materials, textures and colours to the rear of the home. Large modern bedrooms and bathrooms provide generous private living spaces. A new open lounge and dining area adjacent to the stylish and super-functional new kitchen opens via a natural timber deck to the garden, encouraging both indoor and outdoor entertaining. A “little black cocktail dress” powder room affords guests a luxurious private space to freshen up. All accomplished in a sympathetic ground-level-only creation.
