Our client had purchased a large block of more than 1000 square meters in East Kew, suitable for the development of three generously-proportioned town houses. Two of the units were to house the client’s adult children and their families.
Three town houses were already present on the adjacent block to the north with first floor windows overlooking our client’s site.
- Three generous town houses, two for family
- Avant garde design, something different
- Allow for privacy from north-boundary neighbours
- Comfortable outdoor areas
The townhouses face north but still offer privacy from the neighbours: high clerestory windows provide a bright and airy feel at the same time as preventing overlooking. Due to the slope of the site, a combination of timber and concrete floors was used. All three homes accommodate private courtyards to the east and west of their living rooms. Warm, sandstone-coloured concrete blocks for the external walls were low cost and provide good thermal performance. Custom-designed galvanised sunshades offer sun protection in summer and passive solar heating in winter, and add texture to the exterior appearance.
Stained plywood provides colour and texture. The common living areas of each home features a large curved roof that sweeps up to the first-floor gallery and the private quarters, creating a unique and stylish point of interest.
The client experience
